Why do I feel the need to save things?
Is it to save the environment?-not really.
Is it to remember something or sometime that was significant?- nope I usually can't remember when or where I got something just by looking at it.
Is it because I grew up with 7 other siblings and there weren't that many things to call my own?-nope that's not it either.
I think that sometime I will need it or be able to use it and it would be a tragedy to not have it. I also think it runs in my family because my grandma saved milk jug lids on the off chance she might need them. My children have become pack rats also. They have collected many "treasures" over the years. While they are at school I have been weeding out their treasures. They come home and they don't even have a clue that their beloved treasures drove away in the garbage truck this morning. Could somebody please come and weed out my crap while I'm at the store today?
Thanks.

I feel the same way.
I'm not a pack rat, but my kids sure are. They save rocks and happy meal toys and ANYTHING. I do the same as you do though, things magically disappear while they are at school and they never know the difference.
Best thing to do to do it to yourself is move. It forces you to take a hard look at what you have.
Could you move to Pittsburgh please?
Can I throw out some Christmas lights. I have a Christmas pack rat at my house. :)
lol. i save way too much too. But I do get rid of the kids mcdonals toys. i put them all in a gallon ziploc, mark tehm for a dollar at our yard sale and they are the first thing to go.
